Antique cobalt salt glazed majolica seaweed plate, circa mid-to-late 19th century.
An exceptional, rare design featuring a deeply molded seaweed or coral relief, hand-painted in cobalt blue over a fine pin-dot textured ground. The organic pattern flows across the entire surface, with naturalistic clusters of berries or sea grapes nestled along the gently scalloped rim.
A fantastic example of Victorian marine-inspired ceramic design, reflecting the era’s deep fascination with the natural world.
Likely English or French in origin.
Unmarked.
Earthenware.
Condition: Wear commensurate with age. The plate has fine crazing and staining, a chip on the rim, and a hairline crack, all of which are most visible / noticeable on the reverse. Please refer to images.
