Albert Franck: Keeper of the Lanes. His Life, Times & Work by Harold Town.
Published by McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 1974.
Albert Jacques Franck (1899 - 1973), a Dutch-born, self-taught artist who settled in Toronto in 1926, painted detailed nostalgic scenes of Toronto's historical architecture amidst its urban renewal. He showed Torontonians the beauty of their own backyards as they disappeared from physical existence. Particularly drawn to quiet winter scenes, his muted tones, facades, snow-covered roofs, and still streets imbued his paintings with a gentle melancholy, capturing Toronto’s charm amid the urban change. His winter scenes became a signature part of his style, offering viewers a window into the city’s past and emphasizing his appreciation for its overlooked beauty.
