Majolica lobster plate, circa early 20th century.

Made by ceramicist Jose Alvaro.

Alvaro was a Portuguese ceramicist from Caldas da Rainha, known for creating intricate majolica dishes, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His works are typically in the "trompe l’oeil" style, featuring realistic 3D representations of sea creatures like crabs and lobsters, surrounded by mussels, seaweed, and sand. Alvaro's pieces are highly detailed and vividly glazed, making them collectible examples of Portuguese Palissy-style ceramics.

Stamped 'Alvaro Jose Caldas da Rainha Portugal'. Hand painted initial.

Missing one leg (see last image) and a small chip at the base of the blue mussel on the left. Crazing throughout. Otherwise in great condition for age.

Measurements:
12-1/2 w in // 31.8 w cm
