Original oil painting by Canadian artist Clarence Roy Greenaway (1891-1972).
A bright and colourful country scene with a mill in the background and figures playing - possibly fishing - in the river in the foreground.
Oil on canvas board. Framed.
The work is unsigned, however, it was attested in a previous auction and the canvas is inscribed on the back "Painting by Roy Greenaway O.I.P. Attested by R.A. Sundamore (nephew) June 28, 1986." This is covered by the current backing (please see last image prior to framing).
Roy Greenaway was a prolific self-taught painter who spent most of his life as a full-time reporter for the Toronto Daily Star. Toronto street scenes were his most common subject matter, but he also painted in Quebec, the United States, Italy, and England. His works are held in private and public collections and remain popular among collectors of Canadian art.
