Scientist and artist, Wladimir Smirnoff (1917-2000) was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He immigrated to Canada in 1957, where he worked as a professor and researcher for the Canadian Forest Service, becoming renowned for his work in entomology, bacteria and ecology.
With a stock of acrylics in his car, he'd often stop to paint the local flora. He never used brushes, instead opting for a palette knife or spatula to create abstract backgrounds that harmonized with figurative foreground plants.
